The Effects of Soil Improving Cropping Systems (SICS) on Soil Erosion and Soil Organic Carbon Stocks across Europe: A Simulation Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Healthy soils are fundamental for sustainable agriculture. Soil Improving Cropping Systems (SICS) aim to make land use and food production more sustainable. To evaluate the effect of SICS at EU scale, a modelling approach was taken. This study simulated effects on two principal indicators soil health (Soil Organic Carbon stocks) degradation (soil erosion) across Europe using spatially explicit PESERA model. Four scenarios with varying levels combinations cover crops, mulching, compaction alleviation minimum tillage were implemented until 2050. Results showed that while in scenario without SICS, erosion slightly increased average Europe, it significantly decreased highest level applied, especially cropping areas central European Loess Belt. Regarding SOC stocks, simulations show substantial decrease slight overall medium mix high, no SICS. The high implementation an increase stocks Europe. Potential future improvements include incorporating dynamic use, climate change optimal spatial allocation

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock
Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

The expansion and intensification of agroecosystems worldwide has significantly affected the environment at multiple spatial scales (Matson et al., 1997). Agroecosystem effects on atmospheric constituents have altered local, regional, and global environmental quality through windblown soil (Zhang et al., 2001) and emission of particulate matter, reactive N (e.g., NH3 and NOx), volatile organic ...
متن کاملSoil physical properties, soil carbon dioxide fluxes, and soil drainage dynamics of select bioenergy cropping systems
Bioenergy cropping systems have been proposed as a way to enhance United States energy security. However, research on soil physical properties, soil-surface CO2 effluxes, and soil drainage dynamics in such systems is needed to ensure environmental sustainability in the field. The objective of our research was to evaluate soil physical properties and conditions as well as soil-surface CO2 efflux...

متن کاملSoil and soil organic carbon redistribution on the landscape
Patterns of soil organic carbon (SOC) vary widely across the landscape leading to large uncertainties in the SOC budget especially for agricultural landscapes where water, tillage and wind erosion redistributes soil and SOC across the landscape. It is often assumed that soil erosion results in a loss of SOC from the agricultural ecosystem but recent studies indicate that soil erosion and its su...
